Palo Alto honors youth volunteers with President's Volunteer Service Awards

Palo Alto City Council celebrated local youth at their April 21 meeting, honoring 57 students who received the prestigious President's Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes individuals whose community service efforts inspire others and make a positive impact nationwide.

Evelyn Romero, a representative from Youth Community Service (YCS), addressed the council, highlighting the impressive contributions of these young volunteers. YCS, which has been active since 1990, reported that over 14,000 participants engaged in community service, collectively contributing more than 90,000 hours in the past year alone. Romero emphasized the importance of the award, stating it showcases a commitment to community service that future schools and employers value.

The council encouraged attendees to view a report listing all award recipients and invited high school students to participate in YCS's upcoming "Summer of Service," a free six-week program aimed at fostering community engagement.

As the meeting transitioned to a photo opportunity with the honored students, the council expressed pride in the achievements of Palo Alto's youth, reinforcing the message that their dedication to service could lead them to future leadership roles within the community.
