Shreveport City Council designates April 2025 as Autism Acceptance Month

The City Council of Shreveport has officially recognized April 2025 as Autism Acceptance Month, a significant step towards fostering awareness and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This resolution highlights the importance of understanding the unique experiences of those affected by autism, which impacts approximately 1 in 36 children, with boys being diagnosed at a notably higher rate than girls.

During the meeting, council members emphasized the diverse range of abilities among individuals with autism, noting that many possess exceptional skills in areas such as mathematics, science, and the arts. The observance of Autism Acceptance Month and World Autism Day, celebrated on April 2, serves as a vital opportunity to promote inclusivity and understanding within the community.

In a show of solidarity, the Virovski Scribe Bridal of Lights will be illuminated in blue on April 30, an initiative sponsored by Councilwoman Taylor and Holy Angels, to honor families affected by autism. The council encourages residents and local businesses to participate by wearing blue and displaying blue lights in their homes and establishments on this day.
