The discussions highlighted the pressing need for the North South Collector Road, which residents believe is crucial for alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing emergency response capabilities.

A long-time Kihei resident emphasized the importance of the road, especially in light of recent natural disasters like the Lahaina wildfire and severe storms that have caused significant disruptions. The speaker warned that without this road, the community could face gridlock during emergencies, potentially leading to tragic outcomes. "We really need that North South Collector Road to alleviate the traffic and to prevent an emergency and the deaths of a hundred people like we had in Lahaina," they stated.

In addition to road infrastructure, residents raised concerns about safety measures on local streets. Testifiers called for the installation of speed tables on Ken Leo Highway, where speeding has become a daily issue, endangering pedestrians, including children on scooters and bikes. One resident noted, "We have cars that drive 50 miles an hour in a 20 zone every day," stressing the need for effective traffic calming measures.

Another community member highlighted the lack of adequate street lighting in North Kihei, which poses risks for pedestrians, especially at night. They pointed out that while some areas have sufficient lighting, others remain dark, making it difficult for residents and tourists to navigate safely. "We need more lights. It's really dark," they urged.

The meeting also featured young voices, including a seventh grader who shared her positive experiences with STEM programs, advocating for continued support for initiatives that inspire youth in engineering and entrepreneurship.
