One poignant moment came from Desalee Santiago, a member of the Maui Tenant and Workers Association, who passionately addressed the committee about the struggles faced by local residents. “Rent is too high, and households are struggling to make ends meet,” she stated, highlighting the alarming costs of housing in the area. With one-bedroom apartments reaching $2,000 and three-bedroom homes soaring to $4,000, Santiago urged the committee to reconsider budget cuts that could further harm low-income families. The meeting also featured Sharon Kepler, executive director of Kaipukukui, a leadership development program. She advocated for continued funding to support emerging leaders in Maui County, noting that many alumni of the program are actively contributing to the community. “Our program has a track record of producing leaders who make a tangible difference,” Kepler said, underscoring the importance of nurturing local talent to address challenges like affordable housing and economic diversification.

Cassie Yamashita, the community services director for MEO, shared statistics on the impact of county-funded programs, including rental assistance and reentry services for women. “We have served 339 individuals through our rental assistance program,” she reported, illustrating the critical role these initiatives play in supporting the community.
