A passionate plea for continued support of Maui's agricultural future took center stage at the recent Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee meeting. A new farmer from Haleakala Farm in Kula highlighted the critical role of the Maui Farmer Support Network (MFSN) in nurturing new agricultural talent through its Farmers Apprentice Mentoring Program (FAM).

The farmer, a proud graduate of FAM's ninth cohort, emphasized that MFSN is essential for new farmers, providing resources and guidance that extend beyond initial training. "Having support and education available once a farmer starts to develop a farm is really a critical link," they stated, underscoring the importance of practical skills and tools in achieving farming success.

The farmer shared personal experiences of how MFSN's one-on-one coaching has been invaluable, particularly in navigating grant applications and establishing an online presence for their farm. They noted, "You're never too old to learn," reflecting on their journey into social media and digital marketing, areas they previously had no experience in.

MFSN's community initiatives, such as Laulima Days, were also highlighted. These events bring volunteers to assist with physical farm tasks, which can be a significant burden for new farmers. The farmer expressed gratitude for the support, stating, "This community collaboration will open up a new planting block for food production."

In closing, they urged the committee to continue funding MFSN, emphasizing its role in promoting regenerative farming practices, local food production, and community contributions.
