During a recent meeting of the Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee, educators highlighted the significant impact of funding from the Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB) on local STEM education. One teacher shared inspiring stories of how MEDB's support has transformed learning experiences for students, particularly in hands-on STEM programs.

This past year, students participated in an engineering day event, where they interacted with industry professionals and engaged in practical activities, such as building Bluetooth radios. These experiences not only enhanced their understanding of problem-solving skills but also sparked a greater interest in pursuing careers in STEM fields.

The teacher also noted that MEDB's investment in an app development program allowed fifth graders to expand their digital design skills. Building on a previous project that involved creating digital versions of Oulumica stones for Hawaiian video games, students this year designed functional apps, including a simulation game that teaches users about the physics of the traditional Hawaiian bowling game.

In addition to app development, students are currently exploring robotics, 3D modeling, and virtual reality projects related to Oulumica. They are even collaborating on a short film directed by award-winning filmmaker Matt Yamashita. The teacher emphasized that these initiatives, supported by MEDB, keep students engaged and excited about learning.

The educator expressed gratitude to the county council for their ongoing support of MEDB, urging them to continue funding this vital program that has made a significant difference in the lives of Maui's youth. The meeting underscored the importance of community investment in education, particularly in fostering the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.
