A new initiative aimed at addressing the urgent need for long-term housing in Maui County has emerged, following the devastating impacts of recent fires. During a recent Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee meeting, a representative from a local nonprofit highlighted their plans to develop permanent rental housing in Napili, specifically designed for displaced residents.

The project, which includes senior housing and a community center, aims to provide stable living conditions for families affected by the fires. The nonprofit has already secured funding and purchased a lot in Napili, with plans to collaborate closely with the county council and community members to ensure the project meets local needs.

Notably, the site for the housing development coincides with a planned relocation of the Lower Honopi'ilani Highway, a move initiated by the county due to erosion concerns. The nonprofit's representative, Mr. Lee, emphasized that integrating the road replacement into their housing design could save the county significant funds. "We’re happy to donate or collaborate in any way to make this happen," he stated, underscoring the community's support for the initiative.

Committee members expressed interest in the project, with Member Rollins Fernandez acknowledging Mr. Lee's experience in affordable housing and real estate. The meeting also featured additional testimonies, including support for various community programs, reflecting a strong consensus on the need for comprehensive solutions to housing challenges in the area.
