Maui County residents are rallying for a new community playground in Hana, as local advocate Meliana Kuruokawa presented her proposal during a recent government meeting. Kuruokawa, who initiated the project as part of a scholarship requirement, highlighted the lack of public play spaces for children in the area. Her petition garnered over 410 signatures, demonstrating strong community support for the initiative.

During her testimony, Kuruokawa emphasized the importance of a playground for the well-being and healthy development of local children. She noted that families currently face long drives to access the nearest playground, which is two hours away. Kuruokawa urged county leaders to prioritize planning, budgeting, and permitting for the playground, suggesting Put Anima Park as a potential location due to its existing swing sets.

The meeting also featured supportive comments from local officials, including Member Wu Hodgins, who expressed a commitment to follow up on the playground initiative, which has been a priority for her for the past two years. Kuruokawa was encouraged to submit her petition and any additional documentation to aid in the process.
