The Lanai Filipino Community Coalition (LFCC) made a passionate plea for funding during the recent Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee meeting. The coalition is seeking $40,000 to support its ongoing efforts to preserve Filipino heritage and strengthen community ties on Lanai.

Noemi Barbadillo, president of the LFCC, emphasized the organization's vital role in the community, recalling its history as a cultural hub that brought together generations through events like pageants, sports teams, and traditional celebrations. "LFCC was more than just an organization. It was the heartbeat of our Filipino community," Barbadillo stated, highlighting the need to revive these traditions to inspire the youth and foster cultural pride.

The LFCC has hosted over 20 events in the past three years, serving as a venue for public gatherings and fundraisers. However, Barbadillo pointed out that rising costs for supplies, travel, and entertainment have made it challenging to sustain these programs without proper funding. "We can't connect, empower, or grow the way our people deserve," she said, urging the council to allocate funds from the Lanai Economic Development and Cultural Program to support their initiatives.

The request comes at a time when over 70% of Lanai's population identifies as Filipino, yet Barbadillo noted that their voices have become quieter in community discussions. The LFCC aims to change that narrative by engaging the community and uplifting its members through cultural events and educational programs.

As the committee considers the budget, the LFCC's request stands as a significant opportunity to invest in the cultural fabric of Lanai, ensuring that the legacy of the Filipino community continues to thrive for future generations.
