Support for Cultural Education Takes Center Stage at Maui County Meeting

During a recent Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee meeting, educators passionately advocated for increased funding to support cultural education programs. The focus was on Mayor's Bill 41, which aims to allocate funds to the Lanai Economic Development and Cultural Program, specifically benefiting the Lanai Filipino Cultural Center (LFCC).

Miss Annie Baltazar, a teacher from Pampanga, emphasized the importance of cultural education for Filipino students. She highlighted how LFCC's programs enrich students' understanding of their heritage through activities like Filipino Cultural Day, which includes traditional games, food tasting, and storytelling. "This event aims to honor their identity while introducing all students to the beauty of Filipino traditions," she stated.

Sherry Uy, a middle school teacher, echoed this sentiment, advocating for the inclusion of Filipino culture in enrichment classes. She noted that current offerings include Hawaiian dance and financial literacy, and adding Filipino heritage would further enhance students' cultural appreciation.
