Ota highlighted her connections with Sister Cities International, noting support from its president and CEO, as well as the acting head of the board of directors. She believes that this partnership could provide valuable resources and insights into cultural preservation, drawing on Siena's 500 years of successful practices. Ota's personal ties to Siena, where she studied and her daughter was born, further underscore her commitment to this initiative.

The proposal aims to create a framework for collaboration, including youth exchanges and knowledge-sharing programs between the two communities. Ota urged the council to consider the benefits of this partnership, which aligns with Maui's budget priorities, such as cultural arts and economic development.

In addition to the Sister City proposal, discussions during the meeting also touched on workforce challenges in Maui. A local executive director expressed the need for more staff to support community projects, highlighting the importance of workforce development in addressing local needs.
