However, officials acknowledged that predicting kindergarten enrollment is akin to a "roulette wheel," as many factors can influence whether children actually show up for school. This uncertainty has led to a noticeable decline in elementary school numbers, which could have long-term implications as smaller kindergarten classes progress through the grades.

To address these challenges, the district has established specific staffing ratios: 22.15 students per class for kindergarten, 22.3 for grades one through three, 26.3 for grades four through eight, and 27 for high school. Despite these targets, class sizes often do not align perfectly with staffing ratios, forcing principals to make tough decisions about resource allocation. They may also utilize alternative funding sources, such as land trust or advanced placement funds, to help manage class sizes.

The meeting also touched on the impact of scheduling on class sizes, particularly at the high school level. Teachers have opted for extended preparation periods, which has resulted in larger class sizes—approximately 36 students per class under the current AB block schedule. If the district were to shift to a traditional seven-period day, class sizes could decrease to around 32 students.
