The City of Hitchcock recognized the heroic actions of local police officers during its regular council meeting on October 21, 2024. Officers Garcia, Crenshaw, and Totten were honored with life-saving awards for their swift response to a medical emergency involving Mark Cook, who suffered a heart attack while working in his yard on August 10, 2024.
Upon arriving at the scene, the officers found Cook unresponsive and immediately began administering CPR. Their quick actions restored his pulse before paramedics arrived, ultimately saving his life. The council expressed gratitude for the officers' bravery and commitment to public safety, highlighting the critical role law enforcement plays in the community.
In addition to the awards, the meeting included discussions on local zoning changes. A request from a resident to rezone property from agricultural residential to single-family residential was approved unanimously by the planning and zoning commission. This change aims to provide the property owner with more flexibility for future development.
The council also heard from representatives of the only domestic violence and assault service agency in Galveston County, who emphasized the importance of community support in their efforts to assist victims.
These discussions and recognitions reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to public safety and community welfare, reinforcing the vital connections between local government, law enforcement, and residents.
