Southern Illinois University honors Jonathan Gray with Bridal W. Sturgis Award

Southern Illinois University (SIU) welcomed its newest trustee, Tony Williams, during the Board of Trustees meeting on April 17, 2025. Appointed by Governor Pritzker, Williams is a distinguished alumna of SIU Carbondale, holding degrees in elementary education and educational administration. Her impressive career spans over a decade as a public school teacher and includes founding the Children's Center for Creative Learning. Notably, she became the first Black woman in Illinois to operate a McDonald's franchise, showcasing her commitment to diversity and community development.

The meeting also highlighted the prestigious Bridal W. Sturgis Memorial Public Service Award, honoring SIU employees who positively impact their communities. This year, the award was presented to Dr. Jonathan Gray, an associate professor in communication studies. Dr. Gray was recognized for his extensive community service, particularly in supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and promoting sustainability through art and activism. His work exemplifies a dedication to empathy and inclusivity, making a significant difference in the lives of many.

The Board of Trustees expressed gratitude for the contributions of past award winners and emphasized the importance of community engagement in the university's mission.
