“My son is currently in third grade and will be going into fourth grade,” Hurtado said. “It has come to our attention that one of our fourth-grade dual language classes will be removed. This means that both third-grade dual language classes will be in one classroom … we currently have 15 and 17 students in both dual language classes which gives us a total of 32 students.”

Hurtado asked whether there is a plan in place to support a teacher and 32 students at the start of the school year, whether a larger classroom will be provided and how the district will monitor the change.

District staff responded that registration is monitored throughout the summer and principals advocate for additional staff as needed. Dr. Losey said the district intends to hire based on enrollment projections before school begins and that new staff, if added, would receive the same supports and materials as other staff. She said principals will consider classroom size and available space when making assignments.

Administrators noted registration had reached 541 students (about 16% of the district) approximately 15 days into the registration period; they said final staffing decisions will follow as registration concludes.
