Wallingford Public Schools is making significant strides in academic performance and student wellness, as highlighted during the Instructional Committee Meeting on December 2, 2024. A key focus of the meeting was the introduction of high-stakes assessments for students beginning in grade 3, which will continue through grade 8. These assessments, known as the Smarter Balanced assessments, evaluate student performance in English language arts and mathematics against Connecticut's core standards.
Last year, 52% of students in grades 3 to 5 met proficiency standards in language arts, while nearly 55% achieved the same in mathematics. More importantly, the district emphasized individual student progress, noting that the average student met 70% of their growth targets in the following year. This approach ensures that all students, including those with disabilities and English language learners, are included in the assessment process.
Two schools, Mary G. Fritz and Pond Hill, were recognized as Schools of Distinction for their impressive growth in English language arts. The district is committed to supporting at-risk students, defined as those receiving special education services, multilingual learners, or those from low-income backgrounds.
The meeting also showcased the academic initiatives being implemented in grades 3 to 5. Christina Sagnella, principal of Parker Farms, discussed how students are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn, engaging with more complex texts and enhancing their mathematical skills. The focus is on rigorous, relevant, and purposeful instruction, with an emphasis on collaborative learning and data-driven decision-making to tailor educational strategies to meet individual student needs.
Additionally, the district is prioritizing wellness and parent engagement, with plans to involve parents more actively in their children's education. Lisa Carlson, principal of Rock Hill, will provide updates on wellness initiatives in future meetings.
Overall, the Wallingford Public Schools are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes academic excellence and student well-being, setting a strong foundation for future success.
