City plans to replace aging water mains and service lines by 2027

The City Utilities Advisory Committee of Laredo has made significant strides in addressing water infrastructure challenges, as discussed in their recent meeting on April 16, 2025. A key focus was the ongoing efforts to refine the city’s water inventory and ensure compliance with state regulations. By 2027, the city plans to implement an action plan based on the findings from their inventory assessments.

The committee highlighted the importance of securing funding from the Texas Water Development Board to enhance their inventory processes. This funding will allow for advanced testing methods to identify the materials used in existing water lines, particularly concerning lead and galvanized pipes. As part of a broader initiative, the city will replace aging mains and service lines, which will help pinpoint areas with potential contamination risks.

In response to community inquiries about water line breaks, the committee confirmed that they are prioritizing repairs based on a list of 69 high-frequency break locations across all districts. Each district will see improvements, with at least four or five critical mains identified for replacement. The city manager has committed to transparency, stating that the list of prioritized repairs will be made public.

Additionally, the committee addressed concerns about potential cross-connection sites that could compromise water quality. They explained that these sites pose risks where contaminated water could backflow into the system, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and preventive measures.

The meeting concluded with discussions about the absence of fluoride in Laredo's water supply, clarifying that the city does not currently add fluoride, unlike many other regions. This decision aligns with local preferences and regulations.
