The Newton School Committee has secured an $84,000 teacher diversification grant aimed at enhancing recruitment and retention efforts within the district. This funding, which was recently approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), will support various initiatives designed to strengthen the diversity of the teaching staff.

During the April 14, 2025, meeting, committee members discussed how the grant will be utilized to implement several key programs. These include partnerships with the Peroni Sizer Institute for Creative Leadership, which will help train two staff members of color to obtain principal licensure this year. The district also plans to conduct monthly check-ins with new hires to improve support and reduce turnover.

Additionally, the grant will fund licensure support programs to assist teachers in preparing for the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) exams. The district is exploring new recruitment avenues, including online job fairs and repositories, to attract a more diverse pool of candidates.

The initiatives also focus on fostering a supportive school culture through employee resource groups and training on racial identity development, culturally responsive instruction, and nondiscrimination protocols. Professional development opportunities will be provided for black male educators in collaboration with Fessenden School.

The committee emphasized the importance of tracking attendance and engagement to identify future leaders within the system and promote professional growth. The grant represents a significant step toward creating a more inclusive educational environment in Newton, with the potential to positively impact both staff and students in the coming years.
