In a recent meeting of the San Mateo County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo), discussions centered on the potential annexation of unincorporated areas into Redwood City’s water system, highlighting the need for improved water service and emergency preparedness for residents.
The conversation was sparked by ongoing requests from residents in the Quartilaris Mutual Water District, which is situated on the edge of Redwood City. Currently, these residents are connected to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) but face challenges in emergency situations, such as natural disasters, due to the lack of a direct connection to Redwood City’s water services. The meeting revealed that there are 18 households in this district that could benefit from being annexed into Redwood City’s water system, ensuring they have a reliable source of water and support during emergencies.

Subscribe for Free Commissioners noted that Redwood City had previously shown little interest in annexation but indicated a willingness to reconsider if the county assists with the Bayfront Canal project, which aims to address flooding issues affecting both Redwood City and neighboring communities. This potential collaboration could pave the way for a more integrated water service approach, ultimately benefiting residents who currently feel disconnected from city resources.
The discussion also touched on other areas in San Mateo County where residents are surrounded by city limits but remain unincorporated. For instance, residents in West Menlo Park expressed a desire to join Menlo Park, suggesting that such annexations could lead to better service and representation for those communities.
The meeting underscored the importance of having a single water provider in emergencies, as fragmented services can leave residents vulnerable. As the county moves forward with discussions involving the SFPUC and Redwood City, the focus remains on ensuring that all residents have access to reliable water services and are included in the decision-making processes that affect their communities.
This meeting marks a significant step towards addressing the needs of unincorporated residents and enhancing the overall infrastructure in San Mateo County, aligning with broader goals of community integration and emergency preparedness.
