City Council approves homebound library service and reviews meeting room policy

The City of Norwalk Library Board of Directors made significant strides in enhancing community services during their recent meeting on December 12, 2024. A key highlight was the approval of a new homebound service aimed at delivering library materials directly to residents unable to visit the library in person.

The board unanimously approved the operating budget for 2025, which included funding for this innovative service. Board member Mary emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "I think it's a great service," while also raising concerns about potential liability issues related to delivering books to residents' homes. However, it was clarified that deliveries would be made without entering homes, minimizing risk.

Vicky Otis, who played a crucial role in crafting the proposal, noted that custodians would handle the deliveries during their regular runs between libraries. This service is expected to operate twice a week, providing much-needed access to library resources for homebound individuals.

While the board expressed enthusiasm for the homebound service, they agreed to consult the city attorney to review any liability concerns before finalizing the policy. This step reflects the board's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of both library staff and patrons.

In addition to the homebound service, the board also discussed updates to the meeting room policy, with changes highlighted for better clarity on usage. As the board continues to refine its policies, the focus remains on enhancing accessibility and community engagement through library services.
