Woburn plans launch of community electricity program by summer 2025

Woburn City is set to launch a new community electricity program in the summer of 2025, aimed at providing residents with more choices and potential savings on their electricity supply. During a recent meeting, city officials outlined the details of the program, which will allow participants to receive their electricity from a designated supplier rather than directly from Eversource, the current utility provider.

The program will offer three options for residents: Woburn Standard, Woburn Basic, and Woburn Plus. The Woburn Standard will be the default option, providing a balance of cost savings and renewable energy. The Woburn Basic option is designed for those seeking the lowest cost, while the Woburn Plus will include the maximum amount of renewable energy. All options will maintain the same delivery service through Eversource, ensuring that residents will continue to receive one bill each month without any changes to their existing services, such as low-income discounts or solar net metering benefits.

Municipal aggregation programs like this one are gaining popularity across Massachusetts, with over 70 active programs in the state. Currently, more than 47% of residents in Massachusetts participate in such programs, which have historically provided savings in a volatile electricity market. While the city cannot guarantee savings, the program aims to offer stable rates and a reliable supply of electricity.

Participation in the program will be voluntary, and residents will have the option to opt out at any time. Those eligible for automatic enrollment will receive a letter outlining their options as the launch date approaches. The city is currently in the process of selecting a competitive supplier and will hold additional community meetings to discuss pricing and other details once finalized.
