Lakeville's Select Board has approved a new initiative aimed at supporting the local food pantry while addressing overdue library fines. During a recent meeting, the board unanimously voted to implement a "Food for Fines" program at the Jones Library. This program allows library patrons to donate nonperishable food items in lieu of paying overdue fines, with each item equating to one fine waived.

Library Director Dan Jones proposed the initiative, highlighting its dual purpose: to alleviate financial burdens on library users and to bolster the community food pantry. The program will run for one month, during which patrons can bring in food items to clear their overdue charges. However, it is important to note that this initiative does not cover lost items or printing costs.

The library has seen a significant decline in fine revenue, dropping from approximately $8,000 to around $3,500, largely due to the implementation of automatic renewals. The board expressed enthusiasm for the program, with members emphasizing its potential to foster community engagement and support for those in need.

In addition to the food donation aspect, the library plans to set up a donation bin for the food pantry, further encouraging community contributions. The board's decision reflects a commitment to both enhancing library services and addressing food insecurity in Lakeville.
