North Hills School District honored as United Way's Champion District for philanthropy initiatives

North Hills School District has been recognized as a "Champion District" by the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania for its outstanding commitment to philanthropy and community service. During the School Board Legislative Meeting on April 10, 2025, representatives from the United Way, including Janice Sowers and Kevin Platts, presented the award to school officials and students, highlighting the district's successful participation in the Champion District initiative.

The initiative aimed to engage students, faculty, and the community in philanthropic activities. North Hills completed three key tasks between October 1 and March 1, which included organizing a food drive, hosting a holiday event, and fundraising for the United Way. Notably, the district raised $550 through a creative campaign called "Don't Be a Grinch, Buy a Sweet Treat for United Way," where students sold ice cream sandwiches during the holiday season.

In addition to the award, students were also given tickets to a Pittsburgh Pirates game on April 19, recognizing their efforts and contributions to the community. The United Way emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of giving and awareness among students, encouraging them to understand the positive impact they can have.

The meeting also featured reports from student representatives, who shared updates on various school activities, including a successful spring production by the drama club and achievements from the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) state competition, where North Hills students excelled and qualified for national events.

The recognition from the United Way not only celebrates the district's philanthropic efforts but also serves as a reminder of the vital role that schools play in shaping responsible and community-minded citizens. As North Hills continues to promote engagement and service, the district looks forward to building on this momentum in the future.
