Urbandale evaluates transit options comparing microtransit and fixed route services

During the City Council Lunch & Learn Meeting on April 8, 2025, in Urbandale, significant discussions centered around the future of public transit services in the community. The meeting highlighted two proposed transit concepts: the "ridership concept" and the "coverage concept," each designed to address the evolving needs of residents.

The ridership concept aims to enhance service frequency and accessibility, proposing routes that would operate every 30 minutes throughout the day, including evenings and weekends. This model is designed to accommodate the changing travel patterns of residents, who increasingly require transit options beyond traditional peak hours. For instance, the proposed routes would allow residents to reach up to 15,000 jobs within a 45-minute travel window, significantly improving access to employment opportunities.

In contrast, the coverage concept focuses on providing broader service coverage, particularly in outer areas of Urbandale. This model includes a microtransit service that operates on-demand, allowing residents to request rides from their homes to main streets. While this approach would ensure that 73% of residents are within reach of some form of transit service, it offers less frequent service, limiting the number of jobs accessible within the same timeframe to about 7,000.

Council members and transit planners emphasized the importance of public input in deciding between these two models. They acknowledged that both concepts have their merits and challenges, and the decision ultimately hinges on community values regarding transit accessibility versus frequency.
