Salina Council approves land sale to Grand Prairie Villas for $75,000

The Salina City Commission made a significant move towards revitalizing vacant land during its March 10 meeting, approving a preliminary sale of a parcel at 1451 East Gipson Avenue, formerly known as Glenifer Hill Park, to Grand Prairie Villas LLC for $75,000. This decision aligns with the city’s goal of promoting infill development and putting unused properties into productive use.

Commissioner discussions highlighted the importance of ensuring taxpayers receive a fair deal, with the county appraised value of the land estimated at just under $100,000. The commission acknowledged the need for a more precise appraisal but decided to proceed with the sale, contingent upon contract approval and negotiations.

Mayor Linkwitz emphasized the urgency of moving forward with the sale, stating, “We want to favor infill development.” The commission's decision passed with a vote of 4 to 1, reflecting a strong commitment to enhancing the community's landscape and economic potential.

In addition to the sale, discussions included the possibility of utilizing a land bank to manage the property, allowing for future trades or sales that could further benefit the city. This approach could ensure that the land is developed according to community needs and standards, with specific benchmarks set for the new owners.
