Beloit City Council has officially proclaimed April 11, 2025, as Roy Chapman Andrews Day, honoring the legacy of one of the city’s most notable figures. The proclamation recognizes Andrews for his significant contributions to exploration and science, particularly during his expeditions in Mongolia, where he discovered new dinosaur species and the first nest of dinosaur eggs. The day will also celebrate Dr. John Hawks, a distinguished expert in human evolution, who will receive the Roy Chapman Andrews Society's Explorer Award during a public event at Beloit College.
In addition to this recognition, the council proclaimed April 17, 2025, as YWCA Rock County's "Until Justice, Just Is" Day. This initiative aims to raise awareness about systemic racism and promote racial equity within the community. The YWCA's campaign encourages residents to engage in meaningful dialogue and actions to dismantle discrimination. The event will take place at the Harry Moore Pavilion in Riverside Park, featuring keynote speaker Angelica Chapman Sykes.
These proclamations reflect Beloit’s commitment to honoring its historical figures and addressing contemporary social issues, fostering a community that values diversity and equity. Residents are encouraged to participate in both events to celebrate local heritage and engage in important conversations about justice and equality.
