The Groveport Madison School District's April 8 board meeting highlighted a significant surge in student participation in the district's band programs, driven by innovative recruitment strategies and a commitment to accessibility. Choir directors from both middle schools and the high school presented their findings, revealing a remarkable increase in band sign-ups from approximately 90 to 120 students this year, marking a 20% growth.
Nolan Kelly, the high school choir director, emphasized the importance of reaching students directly by bringing instrument fittings to elementary schools, which proved to be a game-changer. "We decided to visit each elementary school and have every single fifth grader in the district try the instruments," he explained, noting that this approach significantly boosted interest in joining the band.

Subscribe for Free Retention rates also soared, with 90% of students remaining in the program from sixth to eighth grade. The directors attributed this success to a variety of engaging activities, including concerts, caroling, and trips to events like the Ohio State celebration concert, which fostered a strong sense of community and excitement around music.
However, challenges remain. The directors raised concerns about scheduling conflicts due to block scheduling, which limits elective choices for students. They proposed solutions such as introducing need-based blocks or separating band classes by instrument type to enhance learning experiences. Additionally, they highlighted the need for financial support to cover busing costs for field trips and other activities, which are crucial for maintaining student engagement.
As the district looks to the future, the directors are optimistic about the potential for continued growth in the band program. With plans to bridge communication between middle and high school bands and a focus on creating a more robust music curriculum, they aim to ensure that the momentum gained this year translates into long-term success for the Groveport Madison School District's music programs.
