La Colaborativa plans health clinic renovation for preventative health services

A proposal to transform a conference room into a health screening space at La Colaborativa in Chelsea has received the green light from the Zoning Board of Appeals. The initiative, presented by Gladys Vega, president of La Colaborativa, and Dr. Priya Serene Gupta from Mass General Brigham, aims to enhance community health services by providing preventative care directly where residents live and work.

The renovation will convert an existing conference room into an exam room and consultation space, allowing for services such as blood pressure checks and nutritional counseling. Dr. Gupta emphasized that the goal is not to replace existing healthcare facilities but to bridge gaps in access to health services for community members who may not seek care elsewhere.

"This is about meeting people where they are," Dr. Gupta stated, highlighting the importance of trust and familiarity in healthcare. The program, known as "Bridal to Health," is designed to empower individuals by offering health education and resources in a comfortable environment.

The board members expressed their support, noting the minor nature of the construction project, which includes adding a sink for hygiene purposes. The proposal was unanimously approved, marking a significant step towards improving health access for Chelsea residents. The new facility is expected to foster better health outcomes by encouraging community engagement and preventative care.
