A new playground has officially opened at Fournier, bringing joy to local children and marking a significant community achievement. Installed just before Thanksgiving, the playground features a beautiful faux mulch surface and is fully fenced, ensuring a safe play environment. Community members, including Claudia Swain and the Peace Dale Congregational Church, spearheaded fundraising efforts, while local businesses like Davitt Design Build, Key Construction, and South County Sand and Gravel contributed labor to make this project a reality.
The playground is just one highlight from the South Kingstown Town Council meeting on December 9, 2024. The council also discussed various partnerships aimed at enhancing community services. Collaborations with organizations such as Tri County Community Action and Tides Family Services are providing essential resources, including heating assistance and behavioral health care. Upcoming events, like a mini canvas painting session for kids, are set to foster community engagement.
In addition to these initiatives, the council reported on significant funding developments. A Family Self Sufficiency Grant from HUD is helping families achieve employment and educational goals, while a safety and security grant is being used to upgrade outdated surveillance systems. The council is also optimistic about a million-dollar earmark grant from Congressman Magaziner's office, which, if fully funded, will support the development of a community center open to all residents.
The meeting underscored the importance of community collaboration and resourcefulness, with the council celebrating a 24% increase in households utilizing the Section 8 program over the past four years. With ongoing improvements and partnerships, South Kingstown is poised for continued growth and support for its residents.
