Andrews Middle School Principal Jennifer Skane honored for heroic fire response

The Medford Public Schools held a regular meeting on April 9, 2025, where several key topics were discussed, including an upcoming event and a commendation for a local school principal.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the announcement of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) annual Day on the Hill, scheduled for May 6. This event will take place at UMass Club downtown at 9 AM and will feature speeches from MASC representatives and state legislators. Attendees, including students from Medford, will have the opportunity to engage with their peers from other communities and enjoy lunch provided by vocational program students at the State House.

The meeting also recognized Principal Jennifer Skane of the Andrews Middle School for her heroic actions during a fire incident on February 11. Principal Skane quickly extinguished a small fire in a school bathroom and ensured the safe evacuation of students and staff. Her prompt response and effective communication with emergency services and the community were praised. During the meeting, she received a governor's citation acknowledging her bravery and leadership.

Additionally, the meeting included the approval of the consent agenda, which covered various administrative matters such as bills, payrolls, capital purchases, grants, and field trips. The motion to approve these items was passed unanimously.

Looking ahead, the interim superintendent provided an overview of the search processes for the positions of assistant superintendent of academics and director of English Learners, indicating ongoing efforts to strengthen the district's leadership.
