Community voices concerns over infrastructure on John and Willow Streets

Infrastructure concerns took center stage at the Southborough Annual Town Meeting on April 7, 2025, as residents voiced urgent calls for road repairs, particularly on John and Willow Streets. Residents expressed fears about the potential dangers of deteriorating roads, with one speaker emphasizing the risk of serious accidents due to heavy traffic on streets not designed for large vehicles. "I'm afraid of going down that street and having to deal with an accident with somebody very seriously injured in a car," one concerned resident stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Ira Shield, a local resident, pointed out that John and Mitchell Streets are dead ends, leaving residents with no alternative routes. He noted that the area is not heavily trafficked, but the safety of those living there is at stake. "There’s no way out. There’s no alternative path at all," he explained.

The meeting also addressed the impact of increased truck traffic on Willow Street, with concerns raised about the infrastructure's ability to handle 25-ton vehicles. Al Hamilton, another resident, highlighted the importance of maintaining access for local businesses that rely on truck deliveries. "If we don't make this repair, they're gonna be thinking about leaving town because they won't have access," he warned.

As discussions progressed, it became clear that the community is united in the need for these repairs. The meeting concluded with a vote, which passed with a two-thirds majority, signaling strong support for addressing the pressing infrastructure issues.
