Southborough Library director announces expansion setback and community event plans

The Southborough Annual Town Meeting held on April 7, 2025, featured significant updates from local officials, including library developments and public health recognitions.

Ryan Donovan, the director of the Southborough Library, opened the meeting by expressing gratitude for community support during the library's proposed expansion project. He announced that the library was not selected for funding from the Massachusetts Public Library construction program, resulting in the return of $150,000 allocated for planning and design. Donovan emphasized the library's commitment to future expansion opportunities and provided an overview of recent library activities. He noted high attendance at library programs, particularly for children and teens, and highlighted a marked increase in the use of electronic books through platforms like Libby and Hoopla.

Donovan also shared details about upcoming events, including "Art in Bloom" on April 10, the library's annual Candidates Night on May 8, and various fundraisers organized by the Friends of the Southborough Library in June. He concluded by announcing the recipient of the Peggy Tuttle Award for Library Service Distinction, which was awarded to Kim Ivers, the library's assistant director, for her dedication and positive impact on the community.

Following Donovan, Chelsea Malinowski, chair of the Board of Health, presented the Doc Stone Public Health Award to Mary Ellen Duggan, the Northborough Southborough School nurse leader. Malinowski praised Duggan for her collaborative efforts with the Southborough Health Department and her contributions to community wellness programs. Although Duggan was not present to accept the award, Malinowski assured that it would be delivered to her.

The meeting concluded with a brief mention of the tricentennial committee, led by Don Morris, indicating ongoing community engagement and planning for future events. Overall, the meeting underscored the town's commitment to public service and community development through its library and health initiatives.
