Southborough tricentennial committee plans year-long celebration and fundraising efforts

The Southborough tricentennial celebration is gearing up to be the town's most significant event yet, as revealed during the recent Annual Town Meeting. Don Morris, a member of the tricentennial committee, announced plans for a year filled with memorable festivities, emphasizing the importance of affordability and inclusivity for all residents.

The committee is collaborating with local organizations, including South Pearl Recreation, to enhance traditional events like Heritage Day and Summer Nights. To fund these celebrations, they are seeking sponsorships and donations through the Friends of Southborough 300, a nonprofit organization that allows contributions to be tax-deductible. Morris highlighted the goal of raising sufficient funds to ensure every resident can partake in the historic celebrations.

Excitingly, the committee has launched a fundraising initiative featuring engraved bricks for Heritage Park, with each brick costing $300. This initiative has already garnered significant support since its launch on Heritage Day 2024. Morris encouraged residents to order personalized bricks to commemorate their families or local businesses, with easy ordering options available online.

In addition to sponsorships, the committee is actively recruiting volunteers to help make the tricentennial a success. Morris stressed the need for community involvement, inviting those with skills or time to join the effort. Monthly meetings will be held for anyone interested in contributing.

As the meeting progressed, moderator Paul Cimino welcomed attendees and confirmed a quorum, ensuring the meeting could proceed. He acknowledged the presence of first-time attendees and led a moment of silence to honor community members who passed away in 2024, including Donna McDaniel, Southborough's first female select board member.

With the tricentennial celebration on the horizon, the town is poised for a year of unity and remembrance, inviting all residents to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime event.
