Students raise goats for milk to support education funding

In a lively atmosphere filled with curiosity and excitement, members of the Mendon-Upton Regional School District gathered for their School Committee meeting on April 7, 2025. Among the highlights was a discussion about an innovative project involving livestock, which has captured the attention of students and community members alike.

Emily, a student representative, shared insights about the goats being used in a unique educational initiative. "They use the goats for milk, and they sell the milk so teachers can go to school and earn the things they need," she explained, showcasing how this project not only benefits the animals but also supports educational opportunities. The enthusiasm in her voice reflected the pride students feel in contributing to a cause that helps others.

The conversation took an intriguing turn when the topic of animal reproduction was introduced. It was revealed that each piece of livestock purchased multiplies significantly, creating a ripple effect of support. "Every animal multiplies by 9 because of the number of times they reproduce," Emily noted. This means that the students' efforts have resulted in a substantial impact, with 54 goats, 9 water buffalo, 9 pigs, 18 honey beehives, and 27 chicks contributing to the community's needs.
