Fire departments request budget increases for training and wellness programs

The Worcester County Budget Workshop held on April 8, 2025, focused on critical funding requests from local fire and emergency services. The meeting addressed several key budgetary items, particularly those exceeding $5,000, which are essential for maintaining and enhancing public safety in the community.

The first significant discussion centered on the funding requests from five rural fire companies: Stockton, Girdletree, Newark, Shell, and Bishopville. Each company requested an increase in their budget from $7,000 to $10,000. This increase aims to better support their operational needs and ensure effective fire service delivery.

Additionally, there was a proposal to raise the fire rescue EMS training fund from $10,000 to $15,000. This adjustment reflects the rising costs associated with training first responders, which is deemed critical for maintaining a well-prepared emergency response team.

Another important topic was the EMS tuition reimbursement program, which is currently set at $8,000. The program is vital for addressing workforce challenges by encouraging more individuals to pursue careers as firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics in the community.

Lastly, the workshop discussed a proposed 4% increase in wellness funding, raising it to $31,200. This funding would allow each of the ten fire companies to reimburse up to $3,120 for required annual physical examinations and cancer screenings, promoting the health and safety of first responders.
