Staten Island Green Club launches school composting and recycling initiatives

Caroline County is making strides in environmental sustainability as local schools implement a composting initiative aimed at reducing waste. During the recent Caroline County Commissioners meeting on April 8, 2025, representatives from the newly formed Green Club shared their progress in promoting eco-friendly practices within the community.

The Green Club, which began in February, has already made significant headway by introducing composting programs in three elementary schools, with plans to expand to all schools by the end of the next school year. This initiative not only aims to minimize food waste but also includes sending uneaten food to local farms for use as animal feed. The club has also established recycling efforts for breakfast bags, preventing approximately 3,000 cartons from ending up in landfills each day.

The commissioners praised the students for their dedication and hard work, highlighting the importance of these initiatives in fostering a culture of sustainability in Caroline County. The meeting concluded with a photo opportunity to celebrate the students' achievements and encourage continued efforts in environmental stewardship.
