Dallas Council proposes TIF funding for new Fire Station 18 construction

Dallas city officials are moving forward with plans to replace the aging Fire Station 18, located on Griffin Street in the downtown area, with a new facility designed to better serve the community. During a recent economic development meeting, interim director Kevin Spath outlined a proposal that includes a minor amendment to the downtown connection Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District project plan and a development agreement with the property owner who will construct the new station.

The city has been collaborating with Dallas Fire Rescue for over three years to address the functional obsolescence of the current fire station. The proposed plan involves the developer financing, designing, and constructing the new fire station, which will then be transferred to the city upon completion. The city will also engage in a property swap, ensuring that both parties exchange properties at fair market value.

A public hearing is scheduled for May 14, where the council will consider the necessary amendments and authorize the development agreement. The project is expected to receive a TIF subsidy of up to $29.4 million to support the construction efforts.

Councilman Ridley expressed support for the proposal but raised questions about the financial timing of the project. Spath clarified that the city would reimburse the developer for the construction costs after the new facility is completed and accepted by the city.

This initiative not only aims to enhance public safety through improved fire services but also reflects the city’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that meets the needs of its residents.
