Brooksville City Council proclaims April 25 as National Arbor Day celebration

During the recent Brooksville City Council meeting held on April 7, 2025, a significant focus was placed on the upcoming 36th annual Arbor Day celebration, scheduled for April 25 at Tom Barn Park. The council read a proclamation highlighting the numerous benefits of trees, including their role in reducing soil erosion, lowering energy costs, and enhancing community aesthetics and property values.

The proclamation emphasized the historical significance of Arbor Day, which was first proposed in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska. Since then, it has evolved into a global celebration, with Brooksville participating since 1989 through various community tree-planting initiatives involving volunteers, scouts, and local schools.

This year’s event will feature guest speakers, including representatives from the Florida Division of Forestry, who will donate trees for planting. The Brooksville Fire Department will also support the event by providing water for the planting activities. Notably, the ceremony will include a poem reading by participants from the Project Looking Ahead program, adding a cultural touch to the environmental celebration.

The council encouraged all citizens to participate in Arbor Day, urging them to support tree protection efforts and engage in planting activities that benefit both current and future generations.
