The Dallas Landmark Commission has taken a significant step towards preserving local history by initiating the process to designate two historic sites as official landmarks. During a recent meeting, the commission unanimously approved the initiation of the Colonial Theater at 1702 Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and the Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church at 14000 Preston Road as historic landmarks.

The Colonial Theater, a notable venue in the community, is set to be recognized for its cultural significance. The commission expressed appreciation for the efforts made by advocates in the community to bring this landmark to fruition.

The Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, recognized as the oldest African American church in Dallas County, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1864. During the meeting, several members of the church community spoke passionately about the church's historical importance and its role in the African American heritage of Dallas. They highlighted the church's long-standing presence and its connection to the freedmen town of Alpha, emphasizing the need to preserve this vital piece of history for future generations.

The church's historian, Elaine Johnson, along with other members, shared personal stories and historical facts that underscored the church's significance. They noted that the church has been a cornerstone of the community for over 160 years, serving as a gathering place and a symbol of resilience and faith.

The commission's decision to move forward with these designations reflects a commitment to honoring and preserving the diverse history of Dallas. As the process continues, both sites will work with the designation committee to finalize their landmark status, ensuring that their stories and contributions to the community are recognized and celebrated. This initiative not only safeguards the past but also enriches the cultural fabric of Dallas for current and future residents.
