Wake County officials discuss affordable housing funding and federal matching dollars

Funding for affordable housing in Wake County is facing scrutiny as discussions reveal a flat funding trend, raising concerns about meeting strategic plan goals. During the recent government meeting, officials noted that while funding for housing remains consistent, it lacks the variability seen in other programs, such as those for Wake Technical Community College, which have specific capital projects.

Commissioner Jackson highlighted the difference in funding obligations, stating that while facilities for Wake Tech and Wake County Public Schools are statutorily required, housing funding is a discretionary decision by the county. This distinction is crucial as it underscores the challenges in securing adequate resources for affordable housing initiatives.

Despite the flat funding, officials emphasized the significant return on investment, noting that for every dollar spent on housing, approximately $11 is leveraged from other sources, including municipalities, nonprofits, and tax credits. This means that while the initial funding appears limited, the total investment in affordable housing could reach nearly $100 million when matching funds are included.

Concerns were raised about the sustainability of these matching funds, particularly in light of changing federal policies. Officials reassured that as long as current funding mechanisms remain in place, the county can continue to facilitate the creation and preservation of affordable housing without directly purchasing properties.

The meeting also touched on the management of the housing preservation fund, which is now administered by Self-Help Credit Union. Further updates on this fund's status are anticipated in future discussions.
