Tennessee lawmakers debate language services in student testing accommodations

The Government Operations Committee of the Tennessee State Legislature convened on April 7, 2025, to discuss significant educational legislation, particularly focusing on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) and its implications for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Representative Faison defended the measure, stating that it aims to diversify assessment methods and better reflect student progress over time.

The committee also addressed the impact of the legislation on charter schools, with questions raised about whether it would prevent them from administering their own assessments. The response confirmed that the legislation would not restrict charter schools in this regard.

After a thorough discussion, the committee voted on the proposed legislation, resulting in 13 votes in favor, none against, and one member present but not voting. The bill will now proceed to the Finance, Ways, and Means Committee for further consideration.
