Veteran reflects on overcoming adversity and dedicating life to helping youth

During a recent community meeting in Utah, Bob Woodson shared his inspiring journey of redemption and community empowerment, highlighting the importance of education and mentorship in transforming lives. Woodson, who has dedicated his life to helping underserved youth, recounted his early experiences growing up in a low-income neighborhood where strong family values prevailed despite economic challenges.

Woodson's father, a member of an all-Black military unit, died from injuries sustained during World War II, leaving his mother to raise five children with limited resources. Despite these hardships, Woodson emphasized the solid educational foundation he received in his community, where schools were supportive and literacy was prioritized. He credited his mother for instilling values that guided him in choosing positive friendships, one of which led him to connect with Matt Robinson, known for his role on "Sesame Street."

After dropping out of high school, Woodson joined the Air Force, where he faced the harsh realities of racism and segregation. His military experience, however, provided him with valuable training and the opportunity to earn his GED. He later attended Cheyney University, the first historically Black college in the United States, where he thrived academically despite being admitted on probation. Woodson's determination and the high expectations set by his professors led to significant academic success.

His career took a pivotal turn while working at a juvenile detention center, where he developed a deep connection with the young residents. This experience ignited his passion for helping at-risk youth, steering him away from a potential career in the space program to focus on community service and empowerment.

Woodson's story resonates with the community's ongoing efforts to support education and mentorship programs for young people.
