Lakeside Schools expand enrollment with four new classes for English TK and Mandarin

In a recent meeting of the Lakeside Union School District (LUSD) Governing Board, excitement buzzed through the air as officials discussed significant expansions in early childhood education. The board revealed plans to open four new Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classes in response to overwhelming community interest, a move aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for local families.

The discussions highlighted the addition of a TK class at Lindo Park and another at Winter Gardens, which will feature Mandarin enrichment to kickstart a new language program. This initiative aims to bolster enrollment in the district's Mandarin program, reflecting a commitment to diversifying language education from an early age. Notably, the Mandarin class has already reached full capacity, underscoring the demand for such programs.

The board also reaffirmed its policy on interstate transfers, emphasizing that priority will be given to students residing within the district. Despite the addition of new classes, approximately 20 to 30 families from outside the district remain on a waitlist, unable to secure spots for their children.

To manage the enrollment process effectively, the district has set a deadline of April 1 for families on the original interest list to confirm their enrollment. After this date, the district plans to assess the situation and potentially open additional classes if interest continues to grow. The board expressed a cautious optimism, balancing the need to accommodate students with the realities of staffing and classroom availability.
