Board meeting features student pledge led by Sophia Duran and Seguin percussion performance

Under the warm glow of the Arlington ISD boardroom lights, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as community members gathered for the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees. The evening began with a heartfelt welcome from President Chapa, who emphasized the importance of civility and respect during the proceedings. “Disruptions will not be permitted,” he stated firmly, setting the tone for a productive meeting.

As the meeting progressed, the spotlight turned to a young fifth grader, Sophia Duran, who led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Her confident delivery was met with applause, and Executive Director of Engagement Equity and Access, Aaron Perales, took a moment to highlight her achievements. Sophia, a student from Corey Fine Arts and Dual Language Academy, not only excels in reading but also plays soccer and competes in academic challenges. “She’s a leader on campus,” Perales noted, showcasing the bright future of students in the district.

The evening's agenda included a series of recognitions, celebrating the talents and contributions of students and staff. Following Sophia’s inspiring moment, the board welcomed a performance from the Seguin High School Percussion ensemble. Although the group had to adjust from a quintet to a trio due to scheduling conflicts, their director, Nathan Boyer, stepped in to accompany them, demonstrating the spirit of teamwork and adaptability.

The trio performed “Coffee Break” by Mark Ford, a lively piece that blends music and theater, captivating the audience with their rhythm and energy. This performance not only highlighted the students' dedication but also underscored the importance of fine arts in the district's educational offerings.

As the meeting continued, attendees were invited to join in a short recess for pictures and celebrations, fostering a sense of community and shared pride in the accomplishments of Arlington ISD students.
