Community Assessments Reveal Barriers to Senior Program Participation in Little Compton

The Little Compton Town Council meeting on December 19, 2024, focused on the evaluation of senior programs and services in the community. A recent survey revealed that approximately two-thirds of respondents do not participate in existing programs at local facilities, including the Hill County Community Center, the Webinar Center, and the Granada Library. The primary barriers to participation were identified as a lack of awareness and programs not aligning with seniors' needs or interests.

The survey indicated that 86% of seniors are unaware of most available programs, raising concerns about the effectiveness of communication regarding these services. While some programs, such as the summer concert series at the Little Compton Community Center, saw good attendance, with 45% of respondents participating, others, like senior lunches, had lower engagement rates.

The meeting highlighted the need for improved outreach to ensure seniors receive timely information about available programs. It was noted that 84% of respondents expressed interest in having a dedicated senior space in Little Compton, suggesting a potential area for future development.

Additionally, the council discussed the importance of intergenerational activities, with many seniors expressing a desire to engage with younger generations through shared programs. Economic security was also a significant topic, with 63% of respondents indicating they have adequate resources, while a small percentage reported financial difficulties affecting their ability to meet basic needs.

The council acknowledged the successful programs currently offered but emphasized the need for adjustments to better meet the community's needs. As they consider future programming and potential renovations or new facilities, the council will take into account the financial constraints faced by some residents to ensure inclusivity in all initiatives.
