Charlestown Town Council has taken significant steps to allocate remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds during its regular meeting on October 28, 2024. The council approved a series of expenditures totaling $289,163.25, aimed at enhancing community services and infrastructure before the December 31, 2024, deadline for fund appropriation.
Among the key projects funded is a $30,000 senior center van, which will facilitate transportation for seniors in the rural community, addressing the lack of public transport options. The council emphasized the importance of this service for medical visits and recreational activities, particularly for the town's elderly population.
Other notable allocations include $28,679.28 for eight police portable radios, $26,000 for a new mower for the disc golf and dog park, and $25,000 for an interior addition to the town hall to accommodate growing staff needs. The council also approved $24,240.69 for emergency chimney repairs at town hall, ensuring the safety and functionality of the building.
A solar-powered scoreboard for Pachelski Field, costing $25,000, was also approved. This innovative solution will eliminate the need for costly electrical installations while providing a modern upgrade to the field's facilities.
The council discussed various other projects, including upgrades to town hall furniture, historical display enhancements, and the construction of new stairs at the senior center. However, some items faced scrutiny, such as the animal control exterior project, where council members debated the necessity of additional landscaping costs.
In a collaborative effort, the council agreed to prioritize projects that directly benefit the community while ensuring that funds are utilized effectively. The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to approve the proposed expenditures, marking a proactive approach to enhancing Charlestown's infrastructure and services before the impending deadlines for ARPA fund usage.
