The Colorado Senate has officially recognized April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and designated April 30, 2025, as Colorado Denim Day. This resolution, introduced by Senators Winter and Frizzell along with Representatives Duran and Puglisi, aims to raise awareness about sexual violence and support survivors across the state.

During the meeting, Senator Winter emphasized the importance of Denim Day, which originated in response to a controversial court ruling in Italy that suggested a victim's clothing implied consent. The campaign encourages individuals to wear jeans as a symbol of protest against the attitudes that condone sexual assault. This year’s theme, "Denim Isn't Always Denim: Believe Survivors, Act Together to Prevent Violence," highlights the increased risks faced by vulnerable communities.

The resolution also addresses the ongoing challenges in supporting survivors, including funding cuts to critical services and the backlog of sexual assault evidence kits in Colorado. Senator Winter pointed out that many survivors hesitate to come forward due to fears of not being believed, underscoring the need for continued advocacy and support.

The Senate adopted the resolution unanimously, with a vote of 35 in favor and none against, reflecting a strong commitment to addressing sexual violence in Colorado. The resolution will be sent to the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CCASA), which has been a vital advocate for survivors for over four decades.

As the state prepares for Denim Day, community members are encouraged to participate in events that promote awareness and support for those affected by sexual violence, reinforcing the message that everyone deserves to feel safe and respected.
