Parkside community praised for supporting students with disabilities and fostering acceptance

During the recent Rockford Public Schools Board Meeting on March 10, 2025, a heartfelt discussion highlighted the importance of community support and collaboration in fostering an inclusive educational environment. A parent shared their personal experience with their child’s transition to Parkside, emphasizing the positive impact the school community has had on their son’s confidence and social development.

The parent noted that while previous preschool staff were caring and compliant with ADA regulations, they felt that the culture and support at Parkside were unmatched. Their son, who has a diagnosis that previously made school a challenge, is now thriving both socially and academically, showcasing the transformative power of a supportive school environment.

In light of their experience, the parent offered two suggestions to enhance the school experience for all students. The first was to foster collaboration between the administration and the community, urging the board to harness the positive energy observed at Parkside. The second suggestion, which had already been discussed, was to provide students with opportunities to visit their new schools before transitioning, allowing them to acclimate and feel more comfortable.
