A new initiative aimed at supporting individuals reentering society from incarceration was a key focus during the Yakima County Commission's work session on March 17, 2025. The proposed DOC Reentry Care Coordination Project, also known as Project Paws, seeks to enhance case management for those transitioning from the Department of Corrections (DOC) back into the community.
The project will partner with the nonprofit organization People for People, which offers employment programs designed to provide job training and placement for individuals seeking work. This collaboration aims to utilize community resources to assist in the reentry process without the need for immediate hiring, allowing participants to gain valuable experience while fulfilling administrative roles within DOC.

Subscribe for Free Commissioners expressed enthusiasm about the potential benefits of this initiative, noting that it could not only aid individuals in finding employment but also create a pipeline for future job opportunities within DOC itself. "DOC was excited about it potentially," one commissioner remarked, highlighting the dual purpose of job training and exposure to potential employment.
In addition to the reentry project, discussions included plans for a summer streets cleanup initiative, which could extend existing cleanup efforts in the county. However, the feasibility of this project is still under review, particularly regarding potential conflicts with city union contracts.
The meeting also touched on performance monitoring for various housing assistance programs, with plans to conduct evaluations for subgrantees within the next six months. This is part of a broader effort to ensure accountability and effectiveness in the county's social service initiatives.
As Yakima County moves forward with these projects, the focus remains on improving community support systems and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations. The anticipated outcomes of these initiatives could significantly impact both individual lives and the broader community landscape.
