Rapid City plans rapid growth with new elementary school and classroom additions

To address these challenges, the board proposed a significant expansion at Rapid Valley Elementary, which would involve adding 10 classrooms to increase capacity by approximately 90 students, bringing the total to 714. This expansion is deemed feasible due to the school's existing layout and its location within a densely populated neighborhood, promoting walkability for students. The estimated cost for this project is around $11.4 million, which includes necessary upgrades for central air conditioning and a secure entrance.

Additionally, the board discussed plans for a new elementary school in the Shepherd Hills area, which is strategically located near future residential developments. This site is already owned by the school district and is expected to support the growing population in that region.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to further explore these expansion plans and develop renderings for potential bond proposals to fund the projects. The board emphasized the importance of proactive planning to ensure that educational facilities keep pace with community growth.
